So, we were going down the hill the other night to Wickenburg and I must say the view is absolutely stellar. Fortunately, as we rounded the bend I was looking at the road and not out over the desert as usual. For there in the road was one of the strangest creatures I’ve seen since we came to live in this fascinating new state.
Behold! We were witness to Arizona’s shy state mammal, the Ringtail Cat. They’re actually misnamed, as they are related to our old Northwest “friend”, the Raccoon. And let me tell you, this guy was much larger than a cat. He walked out from one side of the road, turned his head to look at us, and then sauntered off toward the other side of the Highway.
If you want to know more about this interesting animal, HERE is a pretty good site.
So, let’s see — so far we’ve seen Several Bald Eagles, many covey of quail (right, Lynne?), road runners, buzzards, hawks, falcons, mule eared deer, javelina, and now the ringtail cat. I’m sure there’s more, but I can’t think of everything right now.
